THE PREDICTION

16-year-old Mirra Andreeva will become the youngest player ranked inside the top 80 since Coco Gauff after reaching the third round on her Wimbledon debut via an unfortunate injury to Barbora Krejcikova. The current world number 102 took the first set against the 10th seed on Thursday before the contest began to look untenable but she takes the momentum of five wins on the spin from qualifying into this first encounter with fellow Russian Anastasia Potapova and none of the pressure as the crowd’s likely favourite. World number 23 Potapova is yet to drop a set this week after assured displays in winnable fixtures against Celine Naef and Kaja Juvan but the 22-year-old is capable of more with all the potential to thrive in these conditions one day.

Potapova needed three sets to oust the teenager on her tour debut at the Jasmin Open late last season and Andreeva is more than capable of taking this second encounter to three, if not the full upset, with a wonderfully uncomplicated game that could frustrate her opponent into making plenty of errors. The sensible call is probably backing Potapova to win at least a set but consider the same option for Andreeva with the crowd behind her.
