THE LOWDOWN

ALIZE CORNET

World number 34 Alize Cornet was bumped up to the second round of Indian Wells as a seed at the last minute after Barbora Krejcikova pulled out with an injury. The 32-year-old reached the first Grand Slam quarter-final of her career at the sixth time of asking in January before losing t eventual runner-up Danielle Collins. Cornet won the lasts of her six WTA titles at the Gstaad Open back in 2018.

ANNA KALINSKAYA

World number 90 Anna Kalinskaya was in control of her first round match with Harmony Tan on Wednesday before the Frenchwoman was forced to retire in the second set. The 23-year-old produced a brilliant run to the round of 16 here last October, beating Sara Sorribes Tormo and Viktorija Golubic before losing to Ons Jabeur.

THE PREDICTION

Alize Cornet looks to have surprised herself with her form in 2022, with victories over Garbine Muguruza and Simona Halep at the Australian Open particularly impressive. She should be wining this first encounter with Anna Kalinskaya but the Russian has great recent history at Indian Wells and Cornet’s first round defeat at the Lyon Open last time out is a concern. Take the Frenchwoman to win at least a set in what could just as easily be straight sets as it could need a deciding tiebreak.
