ALEXEI POPYRIN VS NOVAK DJOKOVIC PREDICTION

Novak Djokovic returns to action in the third round after battling past the incredibly valiant Jacob Fearnley on Wednesday. The young Brit played a fearless game and pushed the limits against the legendary Serb but Djokovic ultimately had too much quality. Djokovic would have loved to have avoided spending more time on court than was necessary due to the knee problems he has had of late but he will have taken confidence from being able to get through that.

He now moves on to face Australian Alexei Popyrin who he has already played once this year. They met in the Round of 64 at the Australian Open and Djokovic won in four sets. Popyrin himself comes off a five-set victory over 30th seed Tomas Etcheverry on Wednesday and he knows this is a free hit against Djokovic. He will take note of the way in which Fearnley played – being brave and going for it on his second serve. It paid dividends for Fearnley and Popyrin could well follow suit.

That is unlikely to work over five sets however against Djokovic. The Serb is a long way from his best but his level is still good enough to beat most players including Popyrin. It would be no surprise if he dropped another set, but Djokovic will win in four if it is not three.
