THE PREDICTION

World number 30 Dan Evans takes a poor 3-9 record into the clay swing but the Brit has improved his game on what was his weakest surface in recent seasons, with a memorable run to the semi-finals of the Monte-Carlo Masters two years ago featuring a career-best victory over Novak Djokovic. The 32-year-old looked to be improving his form before a three-set defeat to Lorenzo Sonego at the Miami Open last time out but it is difficult to tell how he will cope in this transition from hardcourts to clay. World number 95 Alexei Popyrin is in a similar position as he continues to work on improving his level from a truly woeful 2022 season. The 23-year-old has already won more matches this year than in the whole of last season, making it seven for 2023 with a comfortable win over wildcard Younes Lalami Laaroussi on Monday. Evans leads this head-to-head record 2-0 after a solid result at Queen’s and a five-set thriller at the US Open two years ago but his form so far this season suggest Popyrin is the slight favourite here. Back the Aussie to earn at least a set and leave the victor up to chance.
