THE PREDICTION

World number 22 Alexander Zverev and number 27 Denis Shapovalov are both players of top 10 quality currently out in the sticks, by their standards, inside the top 30 for different reasons. 26-year-old Zverev is working his way back up the rankings from a horror ankle injury that ended his season in the semi-finals of Roland-Garros last summer and he emphatically emulated his run there earlier this month before running out of steam against eventual runner-up Casper Ruud. 24-year-old Shapovalov is in the doldrums for real after enduring a squalid season so far but the Canadian has some excellent pedigree on grass as a semi-finalist at Wimbledon two years ago, proving what he can do at his peak. Zverev beat old foe Dominic Thiem in straight sets on Tuesday whilst Shapovalov beat Lloyd Harris in similar fashion to see both players get a strong foothold at Halle and home advantage has not always aided Zverev in Germany to suggest this could come very close.

Zverev leads Shapovalov 4-3 in their head-to-head but the Canadian has won three of their last four to make this look a potential thriller late on Wednesday. Three of their last six sets played together went to a tiebreak so consider backing Zverev to earn at least a set and adding at least one tiebreak in the match to leave the victor up to chance.
