THE PREDICTION

World number thee Daniil Medvedev got a first win on the board against Ugo Humbert in three sets on Monday, backing up two impressive straight-set wins so far in Beijing. The 27-year-old has won a remarkable five ATP titles this season, including two Masters events in Miami and Rome, but his form has dropped a little since the summer to see him fall rather meekly to Novak Djokovic in the US Open final last month. World number 10 Alexander Zverev has been enjoying a steady climb back up the rankings this summer after a choppy start to his comeback from injury at the start of the season. The German won the Hamburg 500 in late July for a first title since that horrific injury at Roland-Garros last season and he made it two titles with a strong week in Chengdu last time out.

Three three-setters over Diego Schwartzman, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Nicolas Jarry suggest Zverev is battle-hardened ahead of yet another clash with rival Medvedev and this should be a thrilling semi-final between two players with little love for each other. The pair have met four times already this season with Medvedev winning the first three at Indian Wells, Monte-Carlo and Rome before Zverev avenged the deficit with victory in Cincinnati in August. Medvedev leads their storied head-to-head 9-7 as things stand but their record on hardcourts is finely poised at 7-7. Back Medvedev to earn at least a set, as he has done so in all four meetings this season, to leave the victor up to chance. You could add at least a tiebreak for value, with four played between them this season already.
