THE LOWDOWN

ALEXANDER ZVEREV

World number six Alexander Zverev laboured to a marathon victory over an impressive Cam Norrie on Monday, twice taking the lead before eventually turning the screw 10-3 in the deciding tiebreak. The 26-year-old won four of his five singles matches at the United Cup earlier this month to bring an 8-1 record into this potential thriller with Carlos Alcaraz, over whom he has an encouraging 4-3 record in their head-to-head, as he targets a second semi-final at the Australian Open. The German made the last four for the first time in 2020, going on to reach the US Open final and taking the first two sets before a capitulation handed Dominic Thiem the title.

CARLOS ALCARAZ

World number two Carlos Alcaraz handed Miomir Kecmanovic a third-set bagel in an encouraging return to some of his more blistering form on Monday. The 20-year-old is through to the quarter-finals at the Australian Open for the first time after an occasionally ponderous campaign so far but he should be able to bring his best to this rivalry as he aims to right a negative 4-3 record. Alcaraz won his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open in 2022 but he eclipsed that achievement with an incredible, era-defining victory over four-time defending champion Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon last summer.

THE PREDICTION

Carlos Alcaraz has something of an Alexander Zverev problem despite beating the German handily on a number of occasions. Zverev shocked the Spaniard at this stage of Roland-Garros two years ago to halt what had looked a destined clash with Rafael Nadal and he beat the Spaniard from a set down at the ATP Finals last November to take a 4-3 lead in their head-to-head. Alcaraz has yet to really burst back into the incredible form that saw him romp to victory at Wimbledon last summer, with that his most recent of 12 titles, and Zverev has looked a tough man to beat this fortnight whilst not fully convincing himself – particularly in a five-set scrap against qualifier Lukas Klein in the second round.

Zverev leads their hardcourt head-to-head 3-1 but Alcaraz won their US Open clash at this stage last summer in three sets to make this a really tough call. The Melbourne crowd will create a near-partisan atmosphere for Alcaraz to thrive in but perennial villain of the piece Zverev is as resilient as they come in these conditions. Back both players to win a set to leave the victor up to chance but – if pushed to pick a victor – Zverev probably just edges it at this moment in time.

TIP: BOTH PLAYERS TO WIN A SET
