THE PREDICTION

World number 19 Alexander Zverev conceded just one game to Thiago Monteiro in a clear mis-match on Thursday, casting aside doubts over his mentality after new concerning reports emerged about his behaviour off the court. The 26-year-old has not won an ATP title since claiming the ATP Finals for a second time in 2021 but he suffered a horrendous ankle injury in the semi-finals of Roland-Garros last summer that ended his 2022 season and he did brilliantly on his comeback to once again reach the last four in Paris before defeat to Casper Ruud. World number seven Andrey Rublev also enjoyed a deep run at a Grand Slam recently, similarly reaching the quarter-finals before losing to eventual runner-up Novak Djokovic. The 25-year-old was in a match with fellow Russian Pavel Kotov on Thursday but a straight-sets victory puts him in good stead ahead of this quality quarter-final in Bastad.

Rublev beat Zverev in straight sets in the semi-finals of the Dubai Tennis Championships back in February but he trails 5-1 to the German, who had won all of their previous sets in matches between 2016 and 2021. Both players are very comfortable on clay but Zverev’s record over the Russian is hard to look past, particularly as he was only just back on tour in their last encounter. Back Zverev to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
