23-year-old Alexander Shevchenko brings a career-high ATP world ranking of 48th into his Australian open debut after enjoying an excellent breakthrough season last year. The Russian first impressed with an excellent 10-match winning streak in Madrid last April, winning the Challenger title there before a huge run to the third round of the Masters event, but he ended the year finishing runner-up to Ugo Humbert in his maiden ATP final to suggest more progress is on the way. World number 83 Jaume Munar endured another frustrating season of intermittent form in 2023 but he went one round further in Madrid to complement a couple of quarter-final exits on clay. The Spaniard is capable of finding a purple patch every now and then but back in-form Shevchenko to win well on his debut.
