THE PREDICTION

20-year-old Hamad Medjedovic came into the Astana Open at a career-high ATP world ranking of 120th and he will break that after an impressive opener over fellow Serb Laslo Djere, who was forced to retire injured in their second set. Medjedovic won a Challenger title at the start of the month to continue form that saw him reach the semi-finals of the Gstaad Open on clay in July, where he lost to eventual champion Pedro Cachin, but he is still unproven on all surfaces as a promising prospect. 22-year-old Alexander Shevchenko can break his career-high ATP world ranking of 83rd with victory here after an excellent straight-sets opener over Botic van de Zandschulp on Wednesday. The Russian has also enjoyed his best results on clay this season, winning the Madrid Challenger before a huge run to the third round in the Masters event there, but he impressed at Winston-Salem last month with some huge results on hardcourts over Maxime Cressy and Sebastian Korda.

This first tour-level meeting between the two is a really tough call but back Medjedovic to earn at least a set off the momentum of his Challenger title earlier this month to leave the victor up to chance.
