THE PREDICTION
Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz returns to Madrid with far less form than he entered last spring, dropping down to third in the ATP world rankings after losing to an inspired Grigor Dimitrov at the Miami Open last month. The Spaniard will hope to turn 21 here in Madrid on the 5th May, Men’s Final day next Sunday, but he has struggled on clay so far this season and, arguably, everywhere but a blistering fortnight defending his Indian Wells title in March.
Alcaraz was forced to drop out of both Monte-Carlo and Barcelona with a troubling forearm issue but he should be able to make it past the first few rounds unscathed before it, or a top player, threatens to derail him. World number 59 Alexander Shevchenko enjoyed an incredible stay in Madrid this time last season, winning the Challenger event before a run from qualifying through to a three-set third round exit to Daniil Medvedev, but this should be too steep of a challenge 12 months on. Back Alcaraz to hit the clay running in straight sets but leave the match out of an accumulator considering doubts about his fitness.
TIP: CARLOS ALCARAZ TO WIN 2-0
