THE PREDICTION

World number six Stefanos Tsitsipas overcame something of a bogey surface this week with a title-winning campaign at the Mallorca Open, his first on grass. The Greek successfully defended his Monte-Carlo Open title back in April to claim a second Masters title but he has looked a shadow of his former self for much of the last 12 months since losing to Novak Djokovic from two sets up in his first Grand Slam final at last season’s Roland-Garros. The 23-year-old has lost in the first round at Wimbledon in each of his last two appearances, to Thomas Fabbiano in 2019 and Frances Tiafoe last season, but a confidence boosting run in Mallorca potentially brings him into the fold as a title contender.

Either way, an opening match against Swiss qualifier Alexander Ritschard looks a winnable fixture indeed. The 28-year-old has fought well this week to earn a Grand Slam debut and this will be the first tour-level match of his career, with a new career-high ATP world ranking of 188th incoming. Tsitsipas has four wins under his belt and he will be eager to come through this opener spotlessly for a statement of intent. Back the Greek to win in three.
