THE LOWDOWN

22-year-old Felix Auger-Aliassime set a new career-high ATP world ranking of eighth this week after back-to-back quarter-finals reached in Montreal and Cincinnati, although he stands to lose a large amount of points if he cannot emulate last season’s run to the semi-finals here. The Canadian lost to eventual champion Daniil Medvedev in straight sets here last season but he made a much better show if it in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open in January with a five-set defeat, from a 2-0 lead. Auger-Aliassime is a contender by talent but he desperately needs to tighten up his performances to match his weapons, with all but one of his six matches here last season seeing at least one set dropped to an opponent.

THE PREDICTION

28-year-old Alexander Ritschard qualified well this weekend to make the main draw of the US Open for the first time in much the same way he made his Grand Slam debut at Wimbledon last month. The 28-year-old was vastly impressive in a four-set defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas at SW19 and he faces another top player who is well capable of a slow start in Felix Auger-Aliassime. The Canadian should be coming through this first meeting with Ritschard comfortably but, with a straight-sets win unlikely to be all that valuable, consider a small one-off on the Swiss to cause a huge upset here.
