THE PREDICTION

26-year-old Alexander Bublik is perhaps the most unpredictable player on the ATP tour but it still came as a huge surprise to see him win the Halle Open last week, stunning the likes of Alexander Zverev, Andrey Rublev and Jannik Sinner en-route to his second career title. The Kazakh has been blessed with remarkable, natural racket skills but like all of sports’ best mavericks he lacks any sort of concentration with which to utilise them consistently. Bublik set a career-high ATP world ranking of 26th this week to bulldoze his way into the seeds at Wimbledon and he can, genuinely, challenge anyone here at his best whilst just as easily bombing out in the first round. Five sets is a long time to have to maintain focus for the 23rd seed and world number 64 Mackenzie McDonald reached the semi-finals in Eastbourne this week to set up what could be a thrilling contest here.

The American is enjoying perhaps the season of his career so far, at least in terms of performances, and he has earned at least a set in both previous encounters with Bublik in a finely poised 1-1 head-to-head. Leave this head-scratcher out of an accumulator but otherwise consider this a candidate for five sets or back McDonald to earn at least a set as at one the more dependable player and the likelier loser.
