THE PREDICTION

29-year-old Dominic Thiem set a career-high ATP world ranking of third after his remarkable fight back from two sets down to beat Alexander Zverev to the 2020 US Open title. The Austrian has failed to win a title since, though, as he continues to struggle to find his best level since undergoing wrist surgery last season but he did reach the Kitzbuhel Open final earlier this month before running out of steam against Sebastian Baez. Thiem has not played since, pulling out of Winston-Salem this week, to suggest he could be a little rusty on his first hardcourt match since March and world number 27 Alexander Bublik is a horrid draw in the first round for any player. The 26-year-old won the most prestigious title of his career at Halle back in June, stunning a quality field, and he came perilously close to making the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in a thrilling five-set defeat to Andrey Rublev.

A three-match losing streak was to be expected from the erratic, enigmatic Kazakh but he should be able to improve on recent performances on the big stage. Take Bublik to earn at least two sets against Thiem, who lost in five sets at this stage of SW19 to Stefanos Tsitsipas. You could consider adding at least a tiebreak in the match with Bublik’s hammer serve one of the harder to break.
