THE PREDICTION
World number 49 Alexander Bublik beat Pedro Martinez in straight sets on Wednesday to get a foothold in the Italian Open. The 25-year-old now has a 6-15 record for 2023 after enduring some of the worst form of his career so far at the start, including a very concerning 10-match losing streak that he snapped in mid-February before a run to the semi-finals of the Open 13 in Marseille. That run is proof of the Kazakh’s ability when he finds some rhythm but Bublik is almost certainly the most unpredictable player on tour and this looks a very tricky first meeting to call with world number 35 Ben Shelton. 20-year-old Shelton is still a raw talent right now, particularly away from hardcourts, but he enjoyed a solid run to the semi-finals of the Cagliari Challenger last week and his four tour-level defeats on clay so far this season have come against tough opponents. The American has plenty of tools to excel on this surface one day but back Bublik to earn at least a set here on experience – outside of an accumulator. Three sets would not be a surprise here and nor would at least one tiebreak.
