THE PREDICTION

World number 46 Alex Molcan came back from a set down to beat in-form Mackenzie McDonald in three sets on Tuesday for a surprising opener to his Swiss Indoors campaign. The Slovak has enjoyed an excellent breakthrough season on tour after initially impressing last summer on clay but his win over McDonald did snap a four-match losing run since transitioning back to hardcourts. Similarly, world number 51 Arthur Rinderknech came to the fore last season and after a tough early season in 2022 he looks to have regained much of his confidence. The 27-year-old grabbed what could well be the result of his career, at least in terms of rankings, by stunning Marin Cilic from a set down on Monday and he only recently beat Pablo Carreno Busta at the Gijon Open in similar circumstances. The pair have not met on tour before but Rinderknech is certainly the more comfortable in these conditions in Basel and his recent results make him the fair favourite. Back Rinderknech to take at least a set inside an accumulator or risk the outright win on its own.
