THE PREDICTION

World number 19 Alex de Minaur has enjoyed an excellent start to 2023 but he takes a two-match losing streak into Monte-Carlo after an energy-sapping title-winning campaign at the Mexican Open last month. The 24-year-old owns an excellent 2-0 lead over Andy Murray having never faced the Brit before 2019 but both of their matches, including a bout at the Laver Cup last summer, have needed deciding sets and that has been the story of Murray’s season so far. Eight of the former world number one’s 13 matches this season have seen sets go both ways and he has won seven of those, with a four-set defeat to Roberto Bautista Agut in the third round of the Australian Open following a 5am finish in the second round in that memorable classic against Thanasi Kokkinakis. The defining factor here, though, may well be the surface. De Minaur is an excellent all-courter who spent much of his development on clay growing up in Spain whilst this will be Murray’s first match on the surface since last May. The Brit has won Masters titles on clay in Madrid and Rome but that elusive Monte-Carlo title looks out of reach, for this season at least. Back De Minaur to win outright or risk the three set option here.
