World number 39 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina did well to overcome Daniel Elahi Galan in the form of his life this week at the US Open, winning through in four sets. The 23-year-old reaches a first Masters final earlier this season at the Monte-Carlo Open, finishing runner-up to Stefanos Tsitsipas, but he has endured an odd season overall with a now 21-21 record after three wins in New York. Davidovich Fokina reached the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros back in 2020 and he can emulate that run here with one more win.
MATTEO BERRETTINI
World number 14 Matteo Berrettini overcame Andy Murray in four tight sets on Friday to reach the round of 16 at the US Open relatively comfortably. The 26-year-old won back-to-back titles on grass this summer at Stuttgart and Queen’s before unfortunately contracting covid-19 on the eve of a promising Wimbledon campaign, having finished runner-up there last season. Berrettini reached the semi-finals here in 2019 before defeat to eventual champion Rafael Nadal.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina won the only previous meeting between these two at last season’s Monte-Carlo Open, where the Spaniard has enjoyed a huge amount of success. The 23-year-old is excellent across surfaces but clay is certainly his best surface, while Berrettini should enjoy the edge in this match-up on grass or hardcourts. No one is talking about the Italian as a potential titlist here and he will be eager to change that with a statement victory. Back Berrettini to win outright.
