THE LOWDOWN

Former world number three Stan Wawrinka won the first of his three Grand Slam titles here in 2014, beating then world number one Rafael Nadal in four sets. The Swiss went on to win Roland-Garros in 2015 and the US Open in 2016 to cap off an incredible three years on tour but the 2017 Geneva Open was his latest of a total 16 ATP titles. 38-year-old Wawrinka reached his first final in four years at the Umag Open last summer, losing from a set up to Alexei Popyrin, but he will be pleased just to have played a full season on tour after so many injury setbacks in recent years. 35-year-old Adrian Mannarino has found some incredible renaissance form late in his own career, with 2023 ending up his best yet after picking up three ATP 250 titles in Newport, Astana and Sofia.

THE PREDICTION

Mannarino became French number one this week after helping his nation through to the semi-finals of the United Cup and the Frenchman’s unorthodox brand of left-handed tennis has dismantled many powerful games over the past 12 months. The 20th seed leads Wawrinka 2-0 in their head-to-head to look an unlikely favourite in this quality first round clash so back Mannarino to win at least two sets as the likelier of two very capable victors. This match could be a decent candidate for five sets.

TIP: ADRIAN MANNARINO TO WIN TWO SETS
