Former world number two Alexander Zverev came through a choppy match with rival Daniil Medvedev in three sets on Thursday to creep up to 7-9 in his deficit to the Russian in their head-to-head. The 26-year-old won the Cincinnati Open back in 2021 at the peak of his powers but he has been working his way back up to full potential this season after suffering a serious injury last summer in the semi-finals of Roland-Garros. 35-year-old Adrian Mannarino is a surprising quarter-finalist here in Cincinnati but the Frenchman has enjoyed some of the better form of his career over the summer, particularly on his favoured grass, and he he could all of a sudden break his career-high ATP world ranking of 22nd with one more win. Mannarino stunned an out-of-sorts Felix Auger-Aliassime in the round of 16 and he took the first set from Mackenzie McDonald before his opponent was forced to retire on Thursday. However, Zverev dominates their head-to-head 7-0 across six hardcourts and a grass match with only three of them seeing sets go both ways.
