THE PREDICTION

21-year-old Ann Li will set a new career-high WTA world ranking no matter the outcome here after two comprehensive straight-set wins over Mayar Sherif and Anastasija Sevastova in Melbourne. The American is the seventh seed here but world number 70 Kamila Rakhimova has taken little interest in seeds so far after a shock win over the fourth seed Sara Sorribes-Tormo on Thursday. The 20-year-old is yet to drop a set from the qualifiers through to the quarter-finals and that momentum will be tough for Li to break here in a what looks a tight match. Li was the winner of their only tour-level meeting to date in the first round of the Courmayeur Open last October but three sets there looks a decent benchmark for what may transpire here. In a match that looks likely to need a decider, take Li to win at least a set.
