THE PREDICTION
Reigning ATP Cup champions Russia are through to the semi-finals once again with significantly less firepower, although second-option Roman Safiullin’s efforts this week have been nothing short of heroic. However, the younger Russian’s loss to Jannik Sinner on Thursday suggests he is likely to also come untuck against Denis Shapovalov in the opening rubber and that heaps the pressure on world number two Daniil Medvedev. Unfortunately for world number 11 Felix Auger-Aliassime that is in turn likely to help Medvedev turn it on here to level things 1-1 and create a simply must-watch doubles decider.
Auger-Aliassime beat world number three Alexander Zverev on Thursday in impressive form but it is hard to see the Canadian finding a way through to a first win over Medvedev, with the Russian leading their head-to-head 2-0 including in straight sets in the semi-finals of last season’s US Open. 25-year-old Medvedev went on to win a first Grand Slam that weekend in New York and that level puts him in Novak Djokovic’s category above the rest of the field. Still, Matteo Berrettini forced a decider against Medvedev on Thursday and that is enough to suggest that taking the Russian to win outright here is the sensible move.
