THE PREDICTION

This is undoubtedly the rubber of the opening day at the ATP Cup between world number four Stefanos Tsitsipas and number nine Hubert Hurkacz. Who already share a storied head-to-head that the Greek currently leads 6-2. However, 24-year-old Hurkacz improved significantly last season and the Pole won their most recent encounter on his way to a first Masters title at the Miami Open in similar conditions to Sydney at this time of year. Furthermore, 23-year-old Tsitsipas will be playing his first competitive match since undergoing elbow surgery last November after being forced to withdraw from the ATP Finals. Neither player enjoyed that prestigious year-end event, with Hurkacz losing each of his three group stage rubbers, but he should be well-rested enough for a statement performance here. Given that Poland will likely be 1-0 up the pressure will be on Tsitsipas to perform, further muddying the waters of what should be an enthralling tussle. Take Hurkacz to win at least a set with Tsitsipas’ current level an unknown quantity post-surgery.
