THE PREDICTION

It is surprising to find that this will be the first ever tour-level meeting between world number 13 Diego Schwartzman and number 22 Nikoloz Basilashvili, with both players stalwarts of the top 30 on tour for the last few years. Both players won titles last season, Schwartzman on clay in his native Argentina and Basilashvili on clay in Munich and on a hard court in Abu Dhabi, and both enjoyed late surges of some of their very best tennis late on. 29-year-old Schwartzman made four-successive quarter-finals in the Autumn of 2021, losing to Jannik Sinner in the final of the European Open, whilst Basilashvili blasted through to a first Masters final at Indian Wells before losing to Cam Norrie in three sets. It will be fascinating to see who starts 2022 better in one of the best-looking matches of the round but with Argentina likely 1-0 up already take Basilashvili to find at least a set from somewhere for Georgia.
