THE LOWDOWN

World number four Karolina Pliskova has enjoyed a successful rise back to the top of the game this season despite not yet winning a title. The 29-year-old has lost three finals this season, two Masters events to Iga Swiatek in Rome and Camila Giorgi in Montreal as well as at Wimbledon to Ash Barty. Pliskova has lost in the semi-finals of each of her last three appearances at the WTA Finals. World number five Garbine Muguruza has played out an odd season, with several spells of poor form masked by her first titles won since 2019 at the Dubai Open and Chicago Fall Tennis Classic. The two-time Grand Slam champion twice made the round of 16 at majors this season but she has missed several opportunities for more from 2021. This is her fourth appearance at the WTA Finals and she has failed to make it past the group stage in her last two in 2016 and 2017.

THE PREDICTION

This will be the 11th meeting between Pliskova and Muguruza and the Czech looks to be the heavy favourite to win here with an 8-2 head-to-head record over the Spaniard. Nine of their 10 meetings so far have come on hardcourts, with Pliskova winning eight of them including both at Indian Wells in conditions fairly similar to Guadalajara’s. Both players have been occasionally suspect this season against their top rivals but taking Pliskova as the outright winner here seems the sensible call from overwhelming evidence. Pliskova was the winner back in 2016 when she first faced Muguruza at the WTA Finals in Singapore.
