THE LOWDOWN

World number nine Iga Swiatek is all-but out of WTA Finals contention after taking the first set against Aryna Sabalenka on Saturday before the Belarussian rediscovered her mojo. 20-year-old Swiatek struggled with PMS throughout her first match with Maria Sakkari and she was praised for doing so but losing to a previously out-of-sorts Sabalenka is in keeping with an occasional confidence issue we have seen over the last half of the season. The 2020 Roland-Garros champion has still achieved great things this year with a first Masters title at the Italian Open and victory at the Adelaide International.

World number 10 Paula Badosa is through the WTA Finals semi-finals after beating an excellent Maria Sakkari in straight sets on Saturday. The 23-year-old is one of tennis’ most improved players in 2021, with a first Masters title at Indian Wells last month the icing on the cake after winning her first ever title at the Serbia Open and making a first Grand Slam quarter-final at Roland-Garros. Badosa is riding an eight-match streak since her defeat in the Ostrava Open final to Anett Kontaveit.

THE PREDICTION

Paula Badosa was the winner of their only previous meeting back in July of this year in a straight sets victory at the Tokyo Olympic Games. The Spaniard has won five of her last six matches against top 10 players and she is likely to make it three from three at the WTA Finals with Iga Swiatek struggling to find her imperious best form. Anett Kontaveit’s loss to Garbine Muguruza, just after qualifying for the last four, is evidence to suggest that Badosa is at her most vulnerable in this match and that makes taking her to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable winners a suitably cautious pick. However, Badosa should be able to win this match outright in her current rich vein of form.
