THE LOWDOWN

World number three drew the short straw on her WTA Finals singles debut by facing red-hot Anett Kontaveit in her first round robin. The 25-year-old lost to Kontaveit in straight sets in what may be a theme this week in Guadalajara, with her form curtailing somewhat since an odd injury sustained at the US Open, but she won her first match in the doubles alongside Katerina Siniakova as the top seeds. The current Roland-Garros champion will face a former Roland-Garros champion in Garbine Muguruza after the world number five just lost out in three tight sets to Karolina Pliskova. 28-year-old Muguruza won two more WTA titles this season in Dubai and Chicago to bring her career total to nine including her aforementioned French Open win in 2016 and her Wimbledon title a year later. Two of those titles came on Mexican soil at the Monterrey Open in 2018 and 2019, which could fare her well here in Guadalajara.

THE PREDICTION

There could be some bad blood left over in this fourth meeting between Barbora Krejcikova and Garbine Muguruza after the Spaniard was left fuming over her defeat to the Czech in the round of 16 at the US Open. Krejcikova appeared to sustain an abdominal injury late in that match but Muguruza found her actions, including slowing the play right down between shots, to be unprofessional with words exchanged at the net. Krejcikova currently leads their head-to-head 2-1 after also taking out Muguruza at the Cincinnati Open in three sets, but Muguruza claimed their first meeting in the Dubai Open final earlier in the year. You can bet that Muguruza wants this match more than anything in the group stage for revenge, not least because either player losing this match is likely the end of their WTA Finals singles journey. With Krejcikova’s level dropping in the latter stage of this year and her doubles campaign to keep an eye on, take Muguruza to level their record for 2021 with a gutsy performance.
