THE PREDICTION

19th seed Karolina Muchova reached the quarter-finals here in 2019 from nowhere but since then the 25-year-old has progressed steadily up to her current ranking of world number 22. The Czech has taken out tough opponents in Shuai Zhang and Camila Giorgi so far but a straight-sets victory over Roland-Garros runner-up Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova on Saturday really proved her credentials as a contender here and likely future Grand Slam champion. Muchova made the semi-finals of the Australian Open earlier this year via some impressive wins over Karolina Pliskova and world number one Ash Barty and she has also defeated Naomi Osaka this season. In her way of a second-successive quarter-final spot is world number 33 Paula Badosa, seeded at a Grand Slam for the first time after a hugely successful clay swing saw her reach the semi-finals of the Madrid Masters, win the Serbia Open and reach the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros. The 23-year-old beat Magda Linette in three sets on Saturday as part of a strong campaign but this should be a step up in quality.

Both players are hugely talented and have put in some excellent performances this week, with Badosa battling well to win two three-set encounters and Muchova fighting off seasoned pros. This first meeting should be an enthralling watch on Manic Monday and one that looks very difficult to side with one way or the other. Given she has been here and done it before, take Muchova to win at least a set here in what looks like needing a decider.
