THE PREDICTION

World number 12 Denis Shapovalov put in one of his best ever performances on Centre Court against Andy Murray in a mightily impressive, dominant display. The 22-year-old’s skills have never been doubted but the way he played his high-risk high-reward game on Friday against the crowd was hugely encouraging for his future at the top of the sport. Shapovalov won 62% of points on his second serve and made just three double faults. If he can find anything close to those figures for the rest of his campaign here it should take Novak Djokovic to stop the 10th seed. In the Canadian’s way is world number 10 Roberto Bautista Agut who was broken five times by Dominik Koepfer in their third round match on Friday and yet the Spaniard still managed to come through in straight sets. The 33-year-old reached the semi-finals here last time out in 2019 and he certainly has the determination to challenge Shapovalov here.

Remarkably this is the first meeting between the two, although they have been part of opposing sides on international duty for Canada and Spain in the 2019 Davis Cup Finals where Nadal beat Shapovalov to clinch the title. RBA is an all-court player whose strongest and weakest qualities are sometimes hard to pin down, though what will matter here is his world class mentality. This could easily go to four or five of Shapovalov cannot maintain the level he blitzed Andy Murray with in the third round and Bautista Agut is well capable of surprising those who may expect the Canadian to bulldoze through to the quarter-finals. Take both players to win a set here and leave the winner up to chance.
