THE LOWDOWN

JESSICA PEGULA

World number 26 Jessica Pegula lost in three sets to eventual runner-up Katerina Siniakova at the Bad Homburg Open last time out less than a week after losing in the quarter-finals of the German Open. The 27-year-old claimed her first WTA title in 2019 at the Washington Open and she has slowly evolved over the last year into a very dangerous player. Pegula’s star has risen since with a third round exit at the US Open in 2020 improving into her best showing of a quarter-final exit at the Australian Open this season.

CAROLINE GARCIA

World number 76 Caroline Garcia failed to make it through the qualifiers at the Eastbourne International last week, in keeping with some below-par results this season. The 27-year-old reached a career-high fourth in the WTA world rankings back in 2018 and there is plenty of time left for her to rediscover that form. However, a 13/13 record for 2021 suggests she is lacking consistency in a big way and the last of her total seven WTA titles came in 2019 at the Nottingham Open. Frenchwoman Garcia won the 2016 Roland-Garros Women’s Doubles alongside Kristina Mladenovic and a year later she recorded her best Grand Slam place in the Singles with a quarter-final in Paris.

THE PREDICTION

This should be a fairly evenly matched contest between Jessica Pegula and Caroline Garcia if the Frenchwoman is anywhere near her best level. 27-year-old Garcia’s last title came on grass at the Nottingham Open in 2019 and she only needs a spark of confidence to get going again on tour. However, world number 26 Pegula has that in spades and whilst she often drops a set in her matches the American is a dogged competitor capable of grinding out the win off most comers. This match looks a candidate for going to three sets but a lot of that rests on Garcia’s mentality, so take Pegula to win at least a set here as the likelier winner.
