THE PREDICTION
30-year-old Simona Halep gained revenge over Aliaksandra Sasnovich with a straight-sets win on Tuesday after the Belarussian beat her at Indian Wells last month. Halep is the highest seed left in the draw after Emma Raducanu’s exit at number two and she faces a hugely open field now in her last attempts to win a title in 2021. If she can do so, the Romanian will have won at least one title every season since 2013 and that would be something to savour after a tough 2021 full of injuries and hurdles. 25-year-old Jasmine Paolini won her first WTA title earlier this year at the Slovenia Open, seemingly out of the blue, and wins over the likes of Elise Mertens and Dayan Yastremska, twice, since then are testament to her improving ability. However, Halep was the winner in straight sets against Paolini in their only previous meeting, at last season’s Italian Open, and despite the Italian’s improving form it is hard to see a different outcome here.
