THE PREDICTION

World number two Daniil Medvedev looked in the mood for business this week at the Paris Masters with a confident straight-sets victory over a good Ilya Ivashka on Wednesday. The US Open champion could actually become the year-end number one if Novak Djokovic falters significantly this week, with next week’s Stockholm Open looking like it could be the backdrop to several extra plots if needed. 25-year-old Medvedev is the reigning champion from 2020, after which he went on to win the ATP Finals and he brought that form through to this January to win the ATP Cup as part of Team Russia. World number 39 Sebastian Korda is set for a new career-high ATP ranking no matter the outcome here after a brilliant straight-sets victory over in-form Marin Cilic on Wednesday evening. The 21-year-old has now beaten both champions from the Russian swing after ousting Kremlin Cup winner Aslan Karatsev in the first round, with Cilic winning in St. Petersburg last week.

This could be a blockbuster of a match if Sebastian Korda brings his A game on Thursday evening. The pair have never met on tour before but this could be the start of quite the rivalry as the American makes his steady progress towards a seemingly inevitable top 10 ranking. After his assured win against Ilya Ivashka, reigning Paris Masters champion Medvedev has to be favoured to come through as the outright winner here but a tiebreak at least would not be a huge surprise.
