THE LOWDOWN

World number one Novak Djokovic made it through the round of 16 at the Paris Masters without picking up his racket after Gael Monfils was forced to withdraw with a leg injury. The Serb had previously struggled through a second round match with Marton Fucsovics over three sets in his first match back since losing the US Open final to Daniil Medvedev and he must better the Russian’s results this week to stay the year-end number one for a record-extending seventh time. 34-year-old Djokovic has four titles so far this season as he drew level with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal on 20 Grand Slam titles apiece with wins at the Australian Open, Roland-Garros and Wimbledon. World number 26 Taylor Fritz put in an excellent, solid display to oust man of the moment Cam Norrie in straight sets on Thursday. After a middling season the American burst into form at Indian Wells last month and his aim to break the top 20 this season could still be on if he maintains this level to the end of the season.

THE PREDICTION

Novak Djokovic leads Taylor Fritz 4-0 in their head-to-head record with each of them held at the highest level. This will be their fourth meeting at an ATP 1000 event after Djokovic beat Fritz in straight sets at the Madrid Open and Monte-Carlo Open in 2019 and the Italian Open earlier this year. Their other meeting came at the start of this year, when an inspired Fritz ran on fumes and an injury to push Djokovic all the way to five sets before defeat. In many ways that might have been the point when the American’s confidence left him but it is back with a vengeance as he plays some of the best tennis of his career so far. The fact that Djokovic has played just one match here, and only two in the Doubles after he and Filip Krajinovic lost in the round of 16, should actually hinder the Serb as he looks for more fine-tuning ahead of the ATP Finals. If Fritz is ever to beat the Serb it is now. Taking him to win at least a set here is not as mad as it sounds and there is a real scent of an upset here. However, the clear and sensible line is for the world number one to dig in and win outright.
