THE LOWDOWN

World number four was in a proper battle with in-form Grigor Dimitrov on Thursday but his crunch-time mentality, ever-improving as he matures, kicked in to break in the final game of a three-set slog. The 24-year-old has won four ATP titles so far at the Mexican Open, last week’s Vienna Open, two Masters events in Madrid and Cincinnati and a treasured Gold Medal from the Tokyo Olympic Games via victory over Novak Djokovic. Djokovic returned the favour in the semi-finals of the US Open but this version of Zverev is becoming more of a staple on tour and it will not be long before the German lifts a first Grand Slam. World number eight Casper Ruud secured his place in the ATP Finals with a ruthless straight-sets victory over Marcos Giron, with Cam Norrie’s exit making the race for Turin all the easier. The 22-year-old became the first Norwegian to qualify for the venerated year-end competition after an incredible season in which he won five ATP titles, joint top with Zverev.

THE PREDICTION

With the pressure off qualifying for the ATP Finals behind him, Casper Ruud can enjoy his Paris Masters campaign as he gears up to make history later this month in Turin. However, this looks a step too far against world number four Alexander Zverev, with Ruud’s record against top 10 players still leaving plenty to be desired. The 22-year-old has won just two of eight matches against players inside the top 10 this season: then number nine Diego Schwartzman at the Monte-Carlo Open and number five Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Madrid Masters. A defeat to Alexander Zverev in straight sets at this stage of the Cincinnati Open back in August looks a solid benchmark for what could happen here but with Zverev not quite at the peak of his powers this week taking the German to win outright seems the sensible move.
