THE PREDICTION

World number 28 Lorenzo Sonego should be considered a dark horse for a deep run here at the Monte-Carlo Masters having avoided the dreaded swing from trophy to first round after winning the Sardegna Open on Sunday and beating Marton Fucsovics in straight sets on Tuesday. The 25-year-old played well in a robust competition with Fucsovics and this is a really intriguing first meeting with world number six Alexander Zverev, who will play his first clay court match this year. The German lost his first match at the Miami Open last time out in a shock defeat by Emil Ruusuvuori but he is arguably at his best on clay, or at least his most successful at this level with two of his three Masters wins coming at Rome 2017 and Madrid 2018. However, without the match practice behind him and Sonego arriving off the back of a clay title win there is the scent of an upset about this. Take Sonego to win at least a set here against the recent Mexican Open champion and leave sets and overall result out of it as there is plenty space in this match-up for a whole host of outcomes.
