THE PREDICTION
There are few more fun matches on the tennis calendar than the Doubles at the Laver Cup and with the partisan Boston crowd backing underdogs Team World this should be an interesting battle. The wingspans on these teams is unfathomable, with World number 12 Denis Shapovalov the shortest man at 6”2, and both sides have a man capable of covering both wings on their own in Alexander Zverev for Team Europe and John Isner for Team World. Serving will be key here with all four men likely making the top 10 for service on tour, if we discount Zverev and Shapovalov’s more wayward faults, and the points are likely to be very short as a result.
Evergreen 36-year-old John Isner is the only man with a Doubles title this year after winning the Los Cabos Open alongside Hans Hach Verdugo but all four players have reached at least one quarter-final on tour this season as part of a pair. Zverev, Berrettini and Shapovalov have all played international doubles this season at the ATP Cup, with both members of Team Europe winning their respective matches for Team Germany and Team Italy. The pairing of Isner and Shapovalov could be as unstoppable as it could also be unbalanced. For these reasons, Team Europe should come through the winners on Day 1.
