THE LOWDOWN

17-year-old Coco Gauff came back well from a second-set tiebreak lost to beat Caroline Garcia in three sets on Saturday and she is performing wonderfully well alongside Leylah Fernandez in the doubles. That dream team should positively affect her singles tennis with any match practice on these slightly slower courts only sure to help players adjust and the Indian Wells crowd cannot get enough of them. Gauff won her second WTA title earlier this year at the Emilia-Romagna Open. World number 27 Paula Badosa is set to make a new career-high WTA ranking no matter the outcome of this third round match after an impressive three-set win over Dayan Yastremska. The Spaniard won her first WTA title this year at the Serbia Open but runs to the round of 16 at Wimbledon and the quarter-finals at the Cincinnati Open show that she is an excellent all-court player.

THE PREDICTION

23-year-old Paula Badosa is one of the most improved players of 2021 across all surfaces but her run to the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros and semi-finals of the Madrid Masters are particularly impressive fare. She faces world number 19 Coco Gauff for a first time in what should be an incredible match late on Monday night, with the teenager also reaching the quarter-finals of the French Open this year. Badosa is well capable of winning this match-up but it is hard to see the Indian Wells faithful letting her take more than a set here. Take the fans’ favourite to win outright, probably in three.
