THE LOWDOWN
World number three Karolina Pliskova is the top seed at Indian Wells with Ash Barty and Aryna Sabalenka absent and so far her chances at winning here seem to be going under the radar. The 29-year-old has enjoyed a successful season on tour without trophies yet after losing in the Italian Open, Wimbledon and Canadian Open finals but she has put in some excellent performances. Pliskova has two Masters titles in her 16 total WTA career titles as the Italian Open champion from 2019 and Cincinnati Open champion in 2016. World number 106 Magdalena Frech qualified well earlier this week and took that form into a confident debut on Thursday to beat Saisai Zheng in straight sets. The Pole is up to her career-best ranking so far and she will break the top 100 no matter the result here.
THE PREDICTION
This should be pretty standard fare for Karolina Pliskova with the Czech well capable of taking this in comprehensive straight sets. The Czech star should be able to reach the round of 16 here before things get interesting and flying under the radar suits her down to the ground. Take Pliskova to win and concede less than six games in doing so.
