THE LOWDOWN
World number 174 Emilio Gomez qualified well to reach the first round via a straight-sets win over Ivo Karlovic and he conceded just four games to Facundo Bagnis on Friday. The Ecuadorian reached a career-high 143rd in the world this time two years ago and reaching the second round at Indian Wells on his debut will get him close to breaking that. World number 16 Pablo Carreno Busta is chasing his career-high 10th in the world achieved back in 2017 in what could yet prove to be his best season on tour after two titles won. The 30-year-old claimed a third title on clay at the Andalucia Open before winning his first ATP 500 event at the Hamburg Open back in July but a Bronze Medal from the Olympic Games may be his favourite achievement this year after beating Novak Djokovic in Tokyo.
THE PREDICTION
Emilio Gomez has put in some strong performances so far but Pablo Carreno Busta is coming in hot from a Moselle Open final defeat to Hubert Hurkacz last week. The Spaniard is an excellent all-court player but he is at his best on a hard surface and this should be a fairly comfortable first match in California for the former US Open semi-finalist. Take PCB to win in two here.
