THE LOWDOWN

Former world number one Andy Murray received a wildcard to the first round of Indian Wells, which remains one of three Masters events the Brit is yet to win in his illustrious career. The 34-year-old lost a final here to Rafael Nadal back in 2009 and he is making his first appearance in California since 2017, where a first round loss to Vasek Pospisil signalled the real beginning of his injury saga. Several surgeries later it is unclear how far the three-time Grand Slam champion can go in the game, but it has taken players inside the top 13 to oust him from his last three tournaments and he came very close to beating world number three Stefanos Tsitsipas at the US Open just over a month ago.

Facing him is world number 51 Adrian Mannarino, who is much better than that current ranking after suffering some poor form and injuries this season. The Frenchman came close to beating Roger Federer at Wimbledon back in July before an unfortunate fall ended the contest and his glossy left-handed game can cause problems for anybody in his day.

THE PREDICTION

It has taken players in better form than Adrian Mannarino currently finds himself in to beat Andy Murray on his long road to recovery. 33-year-old Mannarino is an enjoyable player to watch and should contribute well to an entertaining spectacle but he has lost both previous matches to Murray, including a five-set epic at the US Open in 2015, and the Brit should make it 3-0 here.
