THE PREDICTION

World number 42 Carlos Alcaraz has taken out two Brits this week in Dan Evans and Andy Murray, the latter of whom he gained revenge for their incredible battle at Indian Wells earlier this month. The 18-year-old is clearly a player destined to reach world number one in the future if he continues in this way and facing world number seven Matteo Berrettini for a first time will be a great test of his resolve to do so. 25-year-old Berrettini reached a first Grand Slam final earlier this year in defeat to Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon and he has not quite been able to reach those heights since. The Italian has won two ATP titles this year, though, at the Serbia Open and Queen’s Club Championships and he has successfully qualified for the ATP Finals for a first time. He was forced to come back from a set down to win his round of 16 tie here against Nikoloz Basilashvili but that should harden him up for what should be a brilliant match against Alcaraz now.

The teenager has beaten Stefanos Tsitsipas over five sets in recent months but over three it looks a tough ask to oust one of the best servers around. Taking Alcaraz to win at least a set here looks a decent alternative to the result but Berrettini should be able to eventually win through.
