THE PREDICTION

World number two Daniil Medvedev is the top seed in Toronto hoping to go one better here than in 2019 where he finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal. The 25-year-old exploded into form this time two years ago and went on to dominate the hard-court season, reaching six finals on tour in a row across North America and Asia. World number 39 faces a tough ask to go any further at the Canada Masters, although a straight-sets victory over Dan Evans in the first round was a solid result against the out-of-sorts Brit. Bublik has reached two finals this season on hard courts but is yet to claim his first ATP title at 24 years old.

Medvedev and Bublik have already met twice this season with the Russian winning both occasions in straight sets at Roland-Garros and two weeks ago in the first round of the Olympic Games in Tokyo. Those wins sees him lead their head-to-head record 3-0 and at a tournament the 25-year-old fully backs himself in it is hard to see another outcome here but another win in two sets. Bublik can surprise the occasional top player but there is definitely something of a block with some, including Medvedev, that should see this another straight-sets win for the Russian.
