THE PREDICTION

World number six Karolina Pliskova beat Amanda Anisimova in straight sets on Thursday to continue her strong form in Montreal and the 29-year-old will take some stopping here. Having reached the final of her second Grand Slam with a runners-up trophy at Wimbledon the Czech will be gunning for an assault on the US Open next month with plenty of top 20 players’ form stuttering around her. This is a tough quarter-final, though, against world number 48 Sara Sorribes Tormo after the Spaniard continued her own impressive rise with a comeback win over Katerina Siniakova in the round of 16.

Pliskova was the winner of their only previous encounter way back in 2017 with a straight-sets victory at the Australian Open but Sorribes Tormo has only really become this version of herself in recent months. The Spaniard beat Ash Barty at the Olympic Games two weeks ago and looks like breaking into the top 30 this season if she continues in this form. Pliskova should still find a way through this quarter-final but take the Czech as outright winner with Sorribes Tormo well capable of forcing a decider.
