THE PREDICTION
World number 81 Venus Williams was excellent in defeating Kirsten Flipkens in straight sets to reach the second round of the Australian Open. The 40-year-old has finished as runner-up here in Melbourne twice, most recently to her younger sister Serena in 2017 and she reached the third round here last season. 33-year-old Sara Errani came through the qualifiers to make the first round here and came back from a set down to beat the 30th seed Wang Qiang in the deciding set. She faces the unenviable task of playing the villain against Venus Williams next, who will be well-supported by the Melbourne crowd. 40-year-old Williams can often blast through the first few rounds in straight sets at Grand Slams before running out of steam but a three-set victory here looks the likely outcome considering both women’s performances on Monday.
