THE LOWDOWN

STEFANOS TSITSIPAS

  • World number six Stefanos Tsitsipas was completely in control in his first round match against Gilles Simon and dominated the Frenchman throughout in a straight-sets victory.
  • The 22-year-old Greek clearly made a statement in his ruthlessness against Simon, conceding just four games and attacking the veteran’s second serve in an offensive masterclass.

THANASI KOKKINAKIS

  • 24-year-old Thanasi Kokkinakis was one of a wide field of Australians to make it through to the second round of the Australian Open with an impressive straight-sets victory over Kwon Soon-woo.
  • The enigmatic world number 267 will relish the opportunity to face a player he admires in Stefanos Tsitsipas and he will be well supported but not totally as the Greek is well-loved here in Melbourne.

THE PREDICTION

No matter how poorly Gilles Simon played against Stefanos Tsitsipas the way in which the Greek dominated the match immediately improves his standing here as a genuine Australian Open title contender. Thanasi Kokkinakis will play this occasion well in front of a home crowd on Rod Laver Arena but there is little to say for his chances at claiming a set. Fifth seed Tsitsipas was knocked out of the doubles on Tuesday and will be totally focused on the task at hand here in what should be another comprehensive straight-sets victory.
