THE PREDICTION

The pressure will finally be on lucky loser Lorenzo Sonego after his miraculous defeat of the world number one in the quarter-finals here yesterday. Not only did he beat Novak Djokovic in straight-sets but emphatically, starting fiercely and never dropping his intensity to catch the Serb off guard. Whilst Djokovic did not look himself, nothing should be taken away from the Italian’s career performance in Vienna as his unrelenting pressure never let Djokovic into the match. He will have the eyes of the tennis world on him when he faces Dan Evans in the semi-finals and that will alter how his campaign has run so far. 25-year-old Sonego made himself favourite when he beat Djokovic and to be underestimated is just how British number one Evans likes it. In his career-year of 2020 the 30-year-old has relished the opportunities to play the underdog in “Top 20” wins over Alex de Minaur, David Goffin, Andrey Rublev (twice), Fabio Fognini, Karen Khachanov (twice) and, masterfully, Grigor Dimitrov on Friday night. The pair have never played before and Evans will have less time to recover here than Sonego which could come into factoring the result if it goes to a decider.
Evans will hope to match and diffuse Sonego’s fast and furious play in what should be an incredibly close and brilliant contest. This semi-final going to a decider seems a reasonable option for want of a tricky result. Momentum suggests it could be Sonego that comes through but Evans thrives in moments like this and it could go either way.
