THE PREDICTION

27-year-old Marcos Giron continues to stand up to naysayers who consistently underestimate him this season and he achieved a career-win when he took out the seventh seed here Matteo Berrettini. Whilst the Italian has not played much tennis of late and was clearly tetchy in his sub-par form, the American challenged every point of a three-set match and that will put him in good stead here. Milos Raonic has beaten Giron before, at last year’s Indian Wells, but the American took the first set off the world number 17 and something similar could happen here if the Canadian does not come out firing. Raonic has a knack for steamrollering his way through tournaments before falling at the first Top 20 test but he is usually infallible against the lower-ranked opponents he meets. It is hard to go against the Canadian for this reason against the world number 91 but Giron has a real chance and could be worth a hopeful punt. This match going to three sets, as it did the last time they met, seems the most viable option though and Raonic should make it through via the decider.
