THE LOWDOWN

MARTON FUCSOVICS

  • Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics overcame what could have been a tricky challenger in 18-year-old Jannik Sinner in straight sets to reach the third round of the Australian Open.
  • The world number 67 is a player capable of a much higher ranking and proved that in the first round when he caused the first shock of the tournament by beating 13th seed Denis Shapovalov.
  • 27-year-old Fucsovics faces Tommy Paul for the first time, knowing that a victory will see him into the round of 16 at Melbourne for a second time having lost to Roger Federer at that stage in 2018.

TOMMY PAUL

  • World number 80 Tommy Paul caused one of the upsets of the tournament so far as he beat 18th seed Grigor Dimitrov in five gruelling sets, having taken the first two.
  • 22-year-old Paul started the year off in great form at the Adelaide International where be beat Aljaz Bedene and top 50 players Pablo Cuevas and Albert Ramos-Vinolas on his way to a semi-final exit.
  • The young American is a former Roland-Garros boys’ singles champion and his reaching the third round at the Australian Open for the first time should see him eclipse his career-best 79th in the ATP world rankings.

THE PREDICTION

This could prove to be another arduous match between two lower-ranked players in real form and with one upset each so far at the Australian Open. While Marton Fucsovics’ defeat of Denis Shapovalov in the first round was remarkable, the Canadian’s performance was below par but this cannot be said for the four-plus hours Tommy Paul put into defeating Grigor Dimitrov. This could go either way, and Paul could be feeling the burn here after such an effort, but in what looks like another marathon, the American just edges things.
