THE TEAM NEWS

WARRINGTON WOLVES

  • Warrington Wolves endured a dreadful campaign in Daryl Powell’s first season in charge with the big spenders suffering their lowest finish in their Super League history and that has resulted in the Wolves undertaking another significant recruitment drive.
  • Powell will be under huge pressure in these early games as he attempts to change his side’s fortunes in 2023 but they have already been handed an early blow with new signing Josh McGuire copping a seven-game ban from a recent friendly matchup with Leigh Leopards.

21-man squad: Ashton, Bullock, Clark, Currie, Drinkwater, Dufty, Harrison, Hayes, Holroyd, Kasiano, Mata’utia, McGuire, Mikaele, Minikin, Nicholson, Ratchford, Thewlis, Vaughan, Walker, Whitehead, Williams

Unavailable: Gil Dodson (Injured), Connor Wrench (Injured), Joe Philbin (Injured) Josh McGuire (Suspended), Matty Russell (Illness)

LEEDS RHINOS

  • Leeds Rhinos produced a stunning turnaround under Rohan Smith with the Australian’s arrival midway through the season resulting in the Rhinos overcoming their poor start to make it to the Super League Grand Final.
  • Leeds ultimately fell short in the showpiece event as St. Helens proved to be too good for them but with a full pre-season under Smith, another good year could be in store for the Rhinos who come into this opener with a host of players on the sidelines with Mikolaj Oledzki, Harry Newman and James Bentley among those that have failed to prove their fitness.

21-man squad: Myler, Fusitu’a, Handley, Austin, Sezer, Leeming, Tetevano, Martin, Smith, O’Connor, Lisone, Olpherts, Sangare, Holroyd, McDonnell, Gannon, Walters, Tindall, Roberts, Donaldson, Ruan

Unavailable: Nene MacDonald (Injured), Harry Newman (Injured), James Bentley (Injured), Luke Hooley (Injured), Mikolaj Oledzki (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

The new Super League season gets underway with this clash between Warrington Wolves and Leeds Rhinos with both teams having a point to prove for very different reasons. The Wolves were embarrassed by their efforts in 2022 and will be desperate to get off to a positive start as their new-look side takes to the field for the first time. On the other hand, the Rhinos will be hoping to put last year’s Grand Final disappointment behind them. It will be intriguing to see if there is an early response from Warrington and while they are capable of coming out on top, preference is for the Rhinos to edge this one.
